A forex profit and loss calculator estimates the gross result from a position’s direction, size, entry price and exit price. The result does not include trading costs unless you enter them separately.
Forex Profit and Loss Calculator: Estimate a Trade’s Gross ResultFormula for a currency pair
For a position whose account currency is the pair’s quote currency:
Buy gross P/L = Position units × (Exit price − Entry price)
Sell gross P/L = Position units × (Entry price − Exit price)
If your account currency differs from the quote currency, convert the result using the applicable exchange rate.
Example: EUR/USD buy position
Suppose a trader buys 0.10 lot, or 10,000 EUR, at 1.0800 and closes at 1.0850.
- Price change: 1.0850 − 1.0800 = 0.0050
- Gross result: 10,000 × 0.0050 = 50 USD
A sell position with the same entry and exit prices would have a gross result of −50 USD, before costs.
Inputs to review
| Input | What it means |
|---|---|
| Direction | Whether the position is a buy or sell |
| Entry price | The price used to open the position |
| Exit price | The price used to close it |
| Position size | Trade quantity or lot size |
| Conversion rate | Needed if the account currency differs from the quote currency |
The example assumes a conventional 100,000-unit standard lot. Contract sizes and pip definitions can differ by instrument and provider. Spread, commission, swaps, slippage and price gaps may change the net result.
