A forex margin calculator estimates the funds that may be required to open a position. The estimate depends on the position’s notional value, leverage, account currency and the instrument’s contract rules.
Forex Margin Calculator: Estimate Required Margin by LeverageFormula
Required margin = Position notional value ÷ Leverage
If the notional value is in a different currency from your account, convert it to your account currency before dividing by leverage.
Example: EUR/USD
Suppose a position is 1 standard lot, the contract size is 100,000 EUR, the EUR/USD price is 1.0800, and the leverage is 1:100.
- Notional value: 100,000 EUR × 1.0800 = 108,000 USD
- Estimated margin: 108,000 USD ÷ 100 = 1,080 USD
This is an illustration. Prices, contract sizes, leverage and margin rules can vary.
How leverage changes the estimate
The table assumes a notional value of 100,000 account-currency units.
| Leverage | Estimated required margin |
|---|---|
| 1:30 | 3,333.33 |
| 1:50 | 2,000 |
| 1:100 | 1,000 |
| 1:200 | 500 |
What to check
Confirm the instrument’s contract size, current price, account currency, applicable leverage and any margin tiers with your provider. Required margin is different from the amount you may lose if a position moves against you.
